Keith Mitchell Cadillac

I noticed on the SG records it says Keith Mitchell gained 3.1 strokes OTT in the second round of the Cadillac. Is that right? When I look at the tournament stats it was 2.3 and he wasn’t the highest OTT for the round.

Good question, this is due to a couple things. First, our default view for SG records is adjusted SG, which accounts for field strength. That was worth about 0.3 strokes/round OTT at the Cadillac, but that still leaves ~0.5 strokes to explain.

The rest of the discrepancy is because our live tournament stats use strokes gained that we are calculating ourselves from the shot-level data, whereas post-tournament we use the PGA Tour’s official numbers. There are pros and cons to using the PGA Tour’s numbers after the tournament; I guess I just think they are vetting their numbers more than we are, plus their numbers are “official” in some sense, but it can be a bit confusing as you’ve found out.

As for why our numbers differ from the PGA Tour, that comes down to a few potential causes usually. In the case of Mitchell’s Round 2, it looks like it’s likely because we’ve labelled his drive on hole 7 a “recovery position”, based on how far his next shot went, which meant his drive lost 0.7 strokes. The tour likely did not label that a recovery position, and so they applied the SG penalty to his second shot instead.
