Weather forecast @ Torrey Pines for 1/23/25

Did I miss an update to the predicted weather forecast for round 2 @ Torrey Pines yesterday on Data Golf’s site? Every time I looked it was sunny with little wind, yet with the gusty conditions it was so bad they had to delay the play. I’m new to this tool. Is this the kind of poor forecasting that can be expected from this tool? Seems like it should have been updated. In reviewing highlights today on YouTube the announcers were well aware of the potential of wind and gusts up to 35 mph at the start of round 2.

It was discussed a bit in this thread.

tl;dr: we aren’t a weather forecasting site, we pull our data from a specific provider (open weather), and sometimes their weather forecasts are off for various reasons.

The forecast on our site before the round was 10-13 mph for the entire day. Well below the strength of the gusts you mention, but I wouldn’t describe that as “little wind”.

Good opportunity yesterday if you could figure out that the wind would wreak havoc. Nobody saw that coming, especially the effect on Torrey North.

Not everything is going to be telegraphed for you, in fact that is what makes this fun.

Good point, there was wind in the forecast I couldn’t remember the exact range of 10 - 13 mph, that said, perhaps a forecast with wind gusts could be added. Typical forecasts include wind gusts. Is that something that could be added?

I’ll just say that in general the weather on this site is good and as the one complaining yesterday I don’t think one day on the coast should change much. I’ve made a lot of money using this site to basically bet the weather.

What concerned me yesterday was the observed weather was off…

Yeah, we don’t account for gusts when projecting scores from the forecasts. We could… it is a tricky thing to do though, sometimes gusts matter a bit, and sometimes they matter a ton (like yesterday).

It would tricky, I agree especially yesterday with gusts coming out of the east and mostly impacting the North Course. In any event maybe showing gust forecast along side hourly wind speed on your site might be more helpful, is that possible?

I gotta stick up for Matt and Will here…

As someone who spends $400+ a month on weather data for sports betting purposes - expecting a $40 subscription to what is probably the best publicly available betting model on the market to ALSO provide you with actionable predictive weather data is insane.

If you care a lot about the weather - there is work you can do on your own to figure this stuff out.
